Blackberry Lily (Belamcanda chinensis syn. Iris domestica) Blackberry lily was formerly called Chinese Ixia (species origin) until the late 1800’s. Does not need much maintenance or water. Native to Eastern Asia. Hardy to zone 5. Overwinter well here on the North Mountain at zone 5a. Some gardeners have good success as low as zone 4a Fan-shaped leaf blades hold spikes of dark orange speckled flowers, each lasting a day or two, to be followed by many more rounds through the summer blooming period. By mid September, seed capsules split open from their terminal pods to reveal a shiny cluster of blackberries that are often used in dried arrangements. Plants do best in well-drained soils.
