Burnt Orange Horned Poppy (Glaucium flavum var. aurantiacum) A Mediterranean biennial poppy species native to Southern Europe, more specifically, the Mediterranean region. The first botanical descriptions appear in 1763, describing it as a ‘sand dune’ species. A most unique poppy with very uniquely long 5-7” seed pods and silvery-green leaves that resemble endive with their crenulated margins. Horned poppies bloom in early summer sporting showy fiery orange flowers. It thrives in cool dry climates and well-drained, poorer gravely soils.
