Champion of England Pea (Pisum sativum) This is an old heirloom dating back to 1841 and judged as the best pea by the Journal of Horticulture in 1876. The story suggests that the original seed source was exchanged for a pot of beer in the back of an old English pub. This variety would eventually make its way to North America by the mid 1840’s. This is a taller growing pea with vines reaching three feet, with 8-10 very large, green wrinkled tender peas produced on 4 inch pods.
