Chinese Foxglove (Rehmannia angulata) First offered in a 1915 seed catalog for florists, it has become a popular ornamental specimen in many gardens. This upright species is considered a wild herb in Chinese medicine. Roots are traditionally harvested to treat many ailments and “balance the yin”. Considered a soft perennial in most regions of Canada or below zone 7. Plants produce tall flowering spikes bearing nodding, two-lipped, bright rose trumpet-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds and many bee species. Rehmannia flowers are a distinct raspberry colour, with dotted yellow throats much like foxglove species, although not related. The textured leaves grow in rosettes and turn deep red in fall, spreading readily by runners in warmer climates. We have had variable success overwintering them in zone 5b but they are so worthy of annual sowing! Having said that, mulching the rosettes has helped with overwintering. Some of our customers in regions of BC have fared much better, continuing to enjoy these plants season after season.

Planting Instructions: Starting indoors is most reliable method - Sow 10-12 weeks before planting out. Light is required for germination, therefore, do not cover seeds or only cover lightly with fine vermiculite. Mist soil/seeds to avoid covering accidentally. Transplant seedlings after the first true leaves appear. Harden-off transplants outside only after the last frost has passed.
