Wonderberry (Solanum retroflexum) - In the early 20th century, Luther Burbank crossed Solanum villosum and S. guineense, creating what he called Wonderberry. Also known as Sunberry, this shrub-like plant produces clusters of small, dark purple fruits about 1 cm in size that are especially tasty when cooked. Mature plants can reach 36 inches and resemble small woody shrubs. Wonderberry is drought-tolerant and excellent for making jam, jelly, preserves, or cooked sauces. Important: As a member of the Nightshade family, fruits should not be eaten green, as they contain toxic alkaloids. Seeds can be slow to germinate, but germination improves when seed flats are kept consistently moist.
75 days to ripe fruit.
50 seeds per package.
Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/8 inch deep and keep soil warm & moist. Transplant into 1 inch cells or 2 inch pots at 1-2 leaf stage.
