Crimson Red Nicotiana (Nicotiana alata) - Our friends at Cochran Family Farm set us up with this unique seed source in 2023. We planted two different beds with 35-40 plants in each. For several days in August there were dozens of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds dancing around these vibrant cherry-coloured blooms. A really pretty and diverse bloom colour ranging from dark red to burgundy. This is a long standing flowering species, producing blooms well into mid October here in Nova Scotia (Zone 5b) . Plants typically reach 24-30 inches and 12-16 inches across. Makes an excellent choice for beds, borders, container growing, and should be a part of any pollinator garden.Â
75 seeds per packetÂ
Caution: All parts of this plant are toxic if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.
Growing Instructions: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds on the soil surface and press lightly, do not cover, as light is required for germination. A humidity dome can help retain moisture until emergence. Keep soil consistently moist and provide bright light. Seeds typically germinate in 10–20 days.
Harden off seedlings for 7–10 days before transplanting outdoors after frost. Space plants 30–45 cm apart in full sun to partial shade.
