Early Purple Vienna Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea) Pre-dating 1860, The Early Purple Vienna, also known as Di Vienna Violetto, is thought to have originated from Austria. Another one of our ‘Papa Earl’s’ favourite vegetables to grow in his Thunder Bay gardens! He had gifted his daughter Kathy a small jar of these seeds from the basement storage room in the late 1990’s. We have grown this source exclusively on the Revival farm. The inner flesh of this purple variety is white and is slightly larger than the Early White Vienna version. We find the purple more flavourful, having a mild cabbage taste. An under-utilized vegetable that should be a part of your organic garden rotation. Also, a popular choice for those growing microgreens. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

Planting Instructions: A fast-growing, cool-season crop with crisp, mild-flavoured stems. Ideal for spring and fall planting.

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds ½–1 cm (¼–½ in) deep. Thin seedlings to 20–30 cm (8–12 in) apart, with rows spaced 45–60 cm (18–24 in).

Kohlrabi prefers full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Keep soil evenly moist for best growth. Harvest when stems are 5–8 cm (2–3 in) in diameter, before they become woody.
