King Tut Purple Pea (Pisum sativum) We had never grown this one before, but knew of a long time family friend who had coaxed us into trialling it last year. 2019 was a terribly aggravating growing season in Atlantic Canada, however, King Tut thrived with the ample moisture and persevered through the hurricane force winds. King Tut peas show stunningly beautiful two-toned flowers followed by purple-podded peas you can either eat fresh or let dry for soups. As for the name...according to legend, these peas were discovered in King Tut’s Tomb by archeologist Howard Carter, and miraculously the seeds sprouted after three thousand years?! In any case, the variety has Egyptian origins along with other vegetables offered in many seed catalogues of the late 1880’s. Grow these in full sun for the full purple effect!
