Laurentian Rutabaga (Brassica napus) This is an improved version of the old American Purple, bred by the Agronomy Department of MacDonald College in Quebec. Listed in 1942 as ‘Victory Neckless’ and also known as ‘Swede’ in some seed catalogues.  Laurentian has an attractive purple top, an ivory base and fine yellow flesh with top sweet, mild flavour. Roots are large (5-7”), round to oblong in shape and store very well, lasting well into winter. makes a great addition with its rich flavour and texture to soups and stews. Many folks will boil and mash and use as a substitute for mashed potatoes.  Plant in summer for fall and winter use.
