Livingston's Ideal (Solanum lycopersicum) - In 2018 an organic market gardener from Vancouver Island sent us what he penned the 'Ideal' tomato seeds. In fact, they were actually 'Ideal' heritage seeds he had obtained through a grower in Portland, OR. Originally introduced by the Livingston Seed Co. in 1930 as a uniform greenhouse tomato, targeting market growers. We have grown Livingston's 'Ideal' in the greenhouse and as a field tomato, with equally good result. This is an indeterminate growing plant with strong and sturdy stems and fairly dense foliage. The globe-shaped fruits are red in colour with slightly darkened shoulders. Makes a real nice slicer in sandwiches or in salads. A rare offering that we are quite pleased to grow again this year due to high demand.
Indeterminate growth.
70-75 days to maturity.
25 seeds per packet.
Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in warm soil. Transplant seedlings into 1‑inch cells or 3–4 inch pots at the 1–2 leaf stage. Harden off plants for 4–5 days once the risk of frost has passed. Transplant outdoors when day and night temperatures consistently stay above 10 °C. Provide support such as cages or stakes to keep plants tidy and accessible at harvest.
