Marvel Stripe Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) In 2022 we received a package from a Beth Krushylinski of Leamington, ON containing many heirloom tomato, herb and bean seed varieties that were left in glass jars in the kitchen cupboards of her late father’s home. Some of these have been in the family for years dating back to WWII where her father was a cook on the battle ships. One of these was labeled ‘Marbel Beefsteak - Aug. 2010’ of which after growing, we suspect is actually the Marvel Stripe Beefsteak, and likely harvested in 2010. Few seeds germinated but enough to line out 19 plants. This Heirloom showed great promise in our first year of trials with strong, climbing vines that produce large golden fruits with bolts of rose-red striping the flesh, giving them a striking marbleized appearance. Fruits are lower in acid and mildly smooth in flavour. In 2024, we grew a larger selection (50) of plants and were once again pleased with the results.

Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 inch cells or 2 inch pots at 1-2 leaf stage. Staking tomatoes (indeterminate) should be transplanted into 3-4 inch pots. Harden off plants for 4-5 days after risk of frost has passed. Transplant outdoors once day and night temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius
