New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) A native species to North America and is somewhat opportunistic, growing readily along roadsides, in abandoned farmsteads and untouched meadows. Plants are taller with hairy stems vs their New York cousins (Aster novi-belgii). New England aster stands tend to magically appear out of nowhere by mid September, at least here on the North Mountain of Nova Scotia! A tough perennial that survives under a variety of conditions including diverse soil types. Like most asters, they are late season bloomers but provide a very important nectar source for pollinators until frost. Flower colour can range from white, to pink to blue and deep purple. New England Aster is an important host plant of the Pearl Crescent and Checkerspot butterflies.
