Perkins Long Pod Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) Developed in the late 1890’s by Mr. M.B. Perkins, a truck farmer from New Jersey. Seeds were first offered by the Johnson & Stokes Seed Co. around 1900 and sold as the 'Perkins' Mammoth Long Pod’. Pods are 5-7” and bright green, produced on sturdy plants averaging five feet in height but under ideal conditions can reach up to 7’. Very popular as a pickling and canning variety.

Planting Instructions: Direct seed after danger of frost has past. Sow 2 inches apart, 1/2 inch deep into warm soil. Thin plants to 16 inches apart once established. Seeds can be started indoors 4-5 weeks before last spring frost. Keep seed trays warm and do not disturb roots when transplanting.
