Persimmon Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) - Also known as the Russian ‘Khurma’ tomato, this heirloom may have even been grown at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson in 1781. By the mid-1850s, seeds were being offered by early U.S. seed houses, preserving its legacy for generations. Persimmon produces large, orange-peach, beefsteak-style fruits with few seeds and a sweet, low-acid flavour that is perfect for slicing. While it takes 80–85 days from transplant to reach maturity, the fruity, complex flavour makes it well worth the wait. One of the finest low-acid slicing tomatoes in our garden.
Indeterminate growth.
80–85 days from transplant.
25 seeds per packet.
Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in warm soil. Transplant seedlings into 1‑inch cells or 3–4 inch pots at the 1–2 leaf stage. Harden off plants for 4–5 days once the risk of frost has passed. Transplant outdoors when day and night temperatures consistently stay above 10 °C. Provide support such as cages or stakes to keep plants tidy and accessible at harvest.
