Persimmon Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Also known as the Russian ‘Khurma’ tomato, this heirloom may have even been grown at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson in 1781. By the mid-1850s, seeds were being offered by early U.S. seed houses, preserving its legacy for generations. Persimmon produces large, orange-peach, beefsteak-style fruits with few seeds and a sweet, low-acid flavour that is perfect for slicing. While it takes 80–85 days from transplant to reach maturity, the fruity, complex flavour makes it well worth the wait. One of the finest low-acid slicing tomatoes in our garden.
