Purple Calabash Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) - An ancient heirloom with origins dating back to the Aztecs of Mesoamerica, who used it to make salsa, and later grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello in the early 1800s. Indeterminate vines produce highly ribbed, slightly flattened 3–4” dark purple fruits known for their drought tolerance and remarkable flavour. Often described as rich and fruity, with hints reminiscent of red wine, Purple Calabash is a culinary favourite. We have made a wonderful salsa with this variety.
