Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia spp) A perennial flowering plant native to Africa, first classified in 1794 as Kniphofia spp. Long 3 foot spikes produce flaming red flower heads that turn deeper red, resembling a glowing poker as they mature. This is a hummingbird favourite that shows its first flowers by early summer. Plants are hardy, overwintering well at zone 4 and withstanding drought-like conditions.

Growing Information: Requires 4 weeks of cold-moist stratification. Sow indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost. Use a good potting mix in pots that are at least 3 inches deep to allow for taproot establishment. Can be directly sown in fall. Sow 3 seeds per group and space these groups 18-24 inches apart.
Required full sun and well-drained soils.
