Oignon Rose de Roscoff - This French heirloom onion dates back to the mid-1600s and was used extensively on maritime voyages due to its high Vitamin C content and excellent storage properties. Named after the French town of Roscoff in the region of Brittany, this onion is most likely the same variety that made its way to Canada with Acadian settlers, who described a smaller but flavourful, light-pink variety well suited to traditional dishes such as Fricot, a fish or meat stew.
Its flavour is not overpowering, but rather sweet and slightly complex. This is a white-fleshed onion with light pink layers and is by far the best long-storage onion we grow.
We were given a small number of seeds in 2024 as a grow-out and have successfully selected and built a healthy, vibrant population. We are excited to offer this rare French heirloom for the first time.
