Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) Multi-branched, thistle-like herbaceous annual reaching roughly 3 ft. in height. Terminal flowers are a mix of golden-orange and yellow. Grown primarily as an oilseed crop but we sure like the effect of these blooms as an ornamental. Drought-tolerant plants have long taproots. Seed can be harvested approximately 110 days from sowing.Â

Growing Instructions: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last spring frost, or sow directly once soil temperature is above 10ºC. Sow seeds 1" deep, and spacing 6" apart. Expect germination in 7-21 days. Harden off transplants for 5-7 days and transplant to the garden after the danger of frost has passed.Â
