Shoo-Fly Plant (Nicandra physalodes) An annual plant native to Peru, reaching 3-4 feet in height and equally wide as the plants mature. Also known as Apple of Peru, this species is similar to a small bush with many deep blue-mauve coloured flowers which turn into unique paper pods much like other members of the Nightshade family. We plant several of these in our greenhouses to attract and kill whiteflies. Several pants alongside our broccoli seem to have deterred the cabbage butterflies. It is also thought that the seed pods resemble hornet and wasp nests which keep many small insects at a distance. Plants are quite prolific and will need some space.  Also, the green-brown fruits that are encased in green-black calcyes, make excellent dried fall & winter decorations.
