Smooth German Kale (Brassica napus) This German heirloom boasts smooth green leaves that grow to 3-4' wide. Raw leaves have a nice texture and are slightly bitter retaining a tangy mustard flavour. Cooking the leaves increases the sweetness. Unlike other kale species, this variety has an annual growth habit, bolting early in the summer. A great replant option for fall planting!

Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds ½ cm (¼ in) deep. Thin seedlings to 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart, with rows spaced 45–60 cm (18–24 in). Kale prefers full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Keep soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Harvest outer leaves as needed. Leaves are sweetest after a light frost.
