Red Kuri Squash (Hokkaido) (C. maxima) - A thick-skinned orange coloured winter squash with some similarities to the Hubbard group of C. maxima species. This small Japanese winter squash has origins to Northern Japan, where it was commonly sold at markets in Fukushima markets for decades. A popular variety with its smooth and tough rind that is absent of any ridging. Flesh is also firm, fine-grained and yellow coloured. Flavour is described as having a mild chestnut-like flavour. Vine produces 2 - 3 tear-drop shaped fruits. Excellent sweet flavour for a smaller squash with good storage ability.

Planting Instructions: Seed indoors 1/2 inch deep. Line out transplants after risk of frost has past, spacing 5-6 feet apart. Direct seed in raised hills sowing 5-6 seeds 1/2 inch deep. Soil temperature should be at least 21 degrees C. Space mounds 5-6 feet apart, thinning to 3 plants per mound.
